Nestled in the heart of downtown Shediac, Lobster Capital of the World, the newly-constructed Hôtel Shediac is a full service 5 star 60 room hotel. Designed with a contemporary flair, it is also inspired by the architectural concept of the iconic Shediac Inn built in 1853, now demolished. In its heyday, the inn accommodated thousands of guests from around the world, including many dignitaries, members of the royalty and celebrities.

Our Rooms:

All our rooms are designed with our clients’ needs in mind and offer a selection of features not found anywhere at a comparable price. All Hôtel Shediac rooms are spacious and comfortable, with most offering a private balcony with a view on Shediac Bay or the lovely and bustling downtown and Rotary Park. Our rooms feature a working space and frosted glass privacy panes in addition to top-notch amenities such as 40” LED flat screen TVs, Keurig coffee & tea machines, mini-fridge, microwave and secured wired & wireless Internet. Some have a cozy fireplace.

Our Executive Floor is an exclusive hotel within the hotel, it caters to the needs of business people and discriminating guests in search of privacy and luxury. Whether you are staying for business or leisure, you will feel connected to the world and indulgently pampered. Access to the Executive Floor is by swipe-key only and is restricted to guests registered on his floor.

Highlights

Our History:

Hôtel Shediac is built on the storied site of a grand 19th century hotel: Weldon House. With the arrival of train service from Moncton to Shediac in 1857, the tourist industry started to take shape and the small coastal town soon needed top-notch accommodations for its visitors. Of the numerous hotels built around this time, Weldon House, built in 1860 by William E. Weldon, was the most prominent.

During the gay nineties – right before and after 1900 – Shediac was already a popular resort town and the biggest and splashiest affairs were held in the Weldon House, with guests arriving from Moncton by train and P.E.I. by ferry. Over the years, it welcomed heads of state such as Sir John MacDonald, diplomats, members of the royalty, including Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and numerous celebrities such as Bob Hope and Betty Grable.

The hotel was sold by the Weldon family in the 1920s and became The Shediac. In the 1930s, the Depression took its toll and the hotel was bought and sold several times until it became Hotel Shediac in early 1980s. The well-loved landmark was finally demolished a decade ago.

The new Hôtel Shediac is a proud testament to the glory days of Shediac. We have named one of our meetings spaces the Weldon Room in honour of the man who built the original hotel where Hôtel Shediac now stands and helped create our town’s resort heritage.

Discover the Lobster Capital of the World:

When did Shediac become the Lobster Capital of the World? Well, no one is quite sure. But ask residents what right their lively little town has to claim this grand title, and the answer leaps out: “Because the Lobster Festival is held here!” Shediac, indeed, has been home to this extremely popular festival since 1949, so it does have some backing to support the World Capital assertion. And of course, there is the matter of Shediac having the world’s largest lobster sculpture to greet residents and visitors alike.

Lobster fishing and processing have been a mainstay of the local industry since the mid-1800s. In the mid-20th century, local businessman Émile Paturel brought the industry to an international level with a revolutionary packing method that made his fortune. He was also very passionate about Shediac, serving a stint as mayor, and about its burgeoning festival. In fact, he donated all the lobster for the festival’s first edition and declared that if the festival ever ran out, he would make sure another batch would be sent right away.

One of Hôtel Shediac’s meeting rooms is named the Paturel Room after this remarkable man who contributed greatly to our small but vibrant town becoming the true Lobster Capital of the World.
